The Mathematical Sciences Research Group carries out research in Algebra and Combinatorics; Data Science and Industrial Mathematics; and Computational Modelling.
Our research group has made important contributions to research in group theory, coding theory, mathematical biology, system dynamics and operational research.
Our vision is to conduct cutting-edge research across a wide range of mathematics, and to maximise the benefits of that research to our students, to academe and to wider society.
Our research is both pure and applied in nature. We use our expertise to respond to problems that affect society and the economy and we are currently working on applied research projects with Visa UK, Tata Steel, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and NHS Wales Informatics Service, often with colleagues in other parts of the University, such as biology, mechanical engineering and artificial intelligence.
We are also networked into international scholarly collaborations far beyond south Wales. USW Mathematicians are partners in initiatives with NASA, Fujitsu, Germany's National Meteorological Service, the Deutscher Wetterdienst, Swedish metallurgy research institute Swerea MEFOS AB and London Mathematical Society’s Mentoring African Research in Mathematics.
