My research can be grouped into two main themes:
- Coding Theory - My PhD was in the area of codes with a disparity property. As a post doc my main interest was the synchronization of variable length codes and robust data compression and this continues to be of interest. I am also interested in error correcting codes including constant weight codes, permutation codes and the applications of coding theory to Mobile Communications and also DNA.
- Enumerative Combinatorics – my main interest is the application of techniques in this area to recreational maths problems including Sudoku, Kakuro, Magic Squares and Chess problems.
I have had the pleasure of supervising 7 PhD students and two MPhil students. I am currently supervising one PhD student in the area of Magic Squares.
