Title: Counting up to infinity on elliptic curves.

Abstract: I aim to give an elementary introduction to a formulation of the

famous Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (one of the millenium
problems).

This involves counting solutions to certain equations (elliptic

curves) that are of the simplest form for which this is difficult.
I wish to highlight how computational number theory played a crucial
role in the discovery and explain why the conjecture is not just about
a special case but it is at the start of a vast area of surprising

phenomena.
